Text Box: Extending Children’s Abilities through Comprehension
Being able to take factual information and committing it to memory might make it appear that a child has learned something.  However, we know that real learning hasn’t even started until we are confident that the child understands what has been tucked away in the memory bank.  The piece that demonstrates understanding is called comprehension.  Some questions you might as to check for comprehension might be…
·        Can you write in your own words…?
·        Can you write a brief outline…?
·        What do you think could have happened next…?
·        Who do you think…?
·        What was the main idea…?
·        Who was the key character…?
·        Can you distinguish between…?
·        Can you provide an example of what you mean…?
