Q: What languages are offered in Duval County?
A: American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese, French, German, Latin, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.
Q: Does the district offer language instruction at the elementary level?
A: Yes. Currently Martin Luther King Elementary, Chets Creek Elementary and R.L. Brown Elementary offer Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) programs in Spanish. John E. Ford K-8 School offers a Spanish immersion program.
Q: How many years of foreign language study is necessary for graduation from high school?
A: All DCPS students must earn 2 credits in the same language in order to graduate.
Q: How many years of foreign language study is necessary for college admission?
A: Most Florida colleges and universities require a minimum of two years of the same foreign language but preference is often given to those students who have studied three years or more of a language.
Q: Can a student take American Sign Language (ASL) in place of a foreign language?
A: Students may take ASL to fulfill the DCHS graduation requirement. In addition, the State of Florida recognizes ASL as a foreign language credit that fulfills the two-year requirement for college admission. However, some out-of-state colleges and universities may not accept ASL course for foreign language credit.
Q: Is it possible for Duval County students to take an on-line foreign language course?
A: Yes. Currently the Florida Virtual School offers classes in Latin, Chinese, and Spanish.
