The comprehensive K-12 Workforce Education Plan of the Duval County Public School System recommends implementation of the Career Academy Model at all high schools. Career Academies support the district's High School Redesign Initiative.

Andrew Jackson – Health Academy
 

The Health Academy prepares students to enter the job market in various occupations including the following: certified nurse assistant, health-unit coordinator, EKG technician, phlebotomist, and first responder.  By working closely with major hospitals and long-term care facilities, the academy assists students in making the connection between academic and workplace learning.

William M. Raines – Information Technology (IT) Academy
 

The Information Technology Academy offers coursework in computer programming, Web development, computer electronics, and computer networking using Cisco Systems.  After successfully completing courses, students will have the opportunity to take industry certification exams.  Outstanding students will have the opportunity to participate in on-the-job training and/or internships.

The Academy of Finance at Wolfson offers students practical experience in business, finance, and law.  Specialized courses, guest speakers, field trips, and work-based learning opportunities are available to students in this academy. Participants enjoy a competitive edge as they enter the workplace or college classroom.

Englewood – Construction (BEAM-Building, Engineering, Architecture, and Manufacturing) Academy
 

The B.E.A.M. Academy prepares students for post-secondary education and careers in the building, engineering, architecture, and manufacturing industries.  Academic classes with a career-related theme are designed to give students a rigorous and relevant learning experience.  The curriculum includes hands-on assignments and the opportunity to build several structures.  Students also gain valuable and useful knowledge through job shadows, apprenticeships, and internships with local businesses.

Robert. E. Lee – Engineering Academy

Students in the engineering academy will be exposed to the various engineering specialties, and will have numerous opportunities (i.e. participating in industry sponsored competitions) to apply what they have learned in class to real-life situations. Internships and mentorship will be a part of a student’s academy experience.

Terry Parker – International Business Academy

 

Three pathways are available to students in this academy. 

 

The International Business pathway focuses on business principles in the global economy. Representative course work includes Accounting Applications, International Business Systems, International Finance and Law, and Business Internship

 

The Hospitality and Tourism pathway includes the following coursework: Computer Technology for Travel and Tourism, Marketing Management for Travel and Tourism, and Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism.

 

The Culinary Arts pathway explores the areas of food production and cooking, cost control, nutrition, workplace safety, catering, and menu development. A school site restaurant will emphasize restaurant management. The Culinary pathway is slated to open fall 2007.

Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology

 

Aviation Academy

The Aviation program consists of three technical courses of study:  Exploring Aviation, Aviation Electronics, and Aviation Maintenance Technology.  In addition to learning from teachers at Peterson, students work in conjunction with instructors from the Aviation Center for Excellence at Cecil Field.  In the future, it is anticipated that the program will include Airframes & Power Plant Technician, Private Pilot, and Avionics Technician.

A. PHILIP RANDOLPH ACADEMIES OF TECHNOLOGY

 

Construction Academy

 

Designed to meet the industry’s needs for highly trained employees, this academy prepares students for employment or advanced training in the building construction industry. Courses are aligned to integrate core academic knowledge and skills with the study of architectural drafting; heating, air conditioning, and ventilation; carpentry; cabinetmaking; electrical wiring; and plumbing technologies.  Successful students also have the opportunity to participate in pre-apprenticeships.

Terry Parker – Academy of Coastal and Environmental Studies (ACES)

 

Students completing the Academy of Coastal and Environmental Studies (ACES) will be prepared to enter advanced training and/or post graduation employment in specialized fields of the environmental sciences. Course content will include government regulations; ecosystem awareness of land, air, and water resources; sampling and safety procedures; and compliance in monitoring and quality assurance. Instruction will emphasize field experiences centering on the coastal salt marsh and aquatic ecosystems.
