Duval County School Board recognizes students, staff and community
At the monthly meeting of the Duval County School Board (DCSB), Board members and Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals recognized several groups of students, staff and a member of the community for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to Duval County Public Schools.
During the presentation portion of the meeting, which begins promptly at 6 p.m. in the Cline Auditorium, 1701 Prudential Drive, the following people were recognized:
- Alda Tarvin, principal's secretary at Wolfson High School, was recognized for being named Duval County's 2008 School-related Employee of the Year;
- Carl Brown, a third-grade student at Greenfield Elementary School, was recognized for saving his classmate's life using the Heimlich Maneuver;
- Dr. Michael Henry, principal of Landmark Middle School, was recognized for receiving the 2008 Onyx Community Award for Education;
- Teyona Byers from Henry F. Kite Elementary, Auvion Berry from Highlands Middle and Perreline Prinvil from Nathan Forrest High School were recognized for winning the 2007-2008 Willie Gary/Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest;
- Michelle Tsoutsos (Youth Division), Sharon Jones (Adult Division), and Thelma King (Senior Division) were recognized as the winners of the 2007 Outstanding School Volunteer of the Year Award; and
- The following 16 Duval County Public Schools' students were recognized for being named Tomorrow's Leaders during the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast: Akim Griffin, Andrew Jackson High School; Octavia Johnson, Andrew Jackson High School; Kenyetta Watson, Andrew Jackson High School; Fan Zeng, Baldwin Middle-Senior High; Micah Barker, Darnell-Cookman Middle School; Joshua Joiner, Frank H. Peterson High School; Tyrone Floyd, Jean Ribault High School; Dante Dartiguenave, Paxon Middle School; Terell Robinson, Paxon Middle School; Nykeria Johnson, Ribault Middle School; Jeremiah Morman, Ribault Middle School; Keon Hayward, Sandalwood High School; Olajuwon Harris, Southside Middle School; Jordan A. MacKenzie, Stanton College Preparatory; Matthew S. Soberano, Stanton College Preparatory; and Marquise Braithwaite, William M. Raines High School.
