Duval County Spelling Bee Winner Crowned
Ashley Elisabeth Barron, a fifth-grade student at San Mateo Elementary, won the 2008 Duval County School District Spelling Bee held Thursday night at Landon Middle School. She won by spelling the word “predominant" correctly.
Ashley is the daughter of Fred and Elyse Barron.
Twenty-one elementary and middle school students from 14 public and seven private schools competed for the right to represent Duval County in the Regional Spelling Bee. The regional competition is scheduled for February 23 in
Jacksonville.
The winner of the regional bee will advance to compete in the 2008 Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, scheduled May 29-30 in Washington, D.C.
The Duval County Spelling Bee was sponsored by The Florida Times-Union, and conducted according to the contest rules of the national spelling bee.
Kathryn LeRoy, chief officer of curriculum services at Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) and Jill Lively, a DCPS elementary school teacher, served as the spelling bee coordinators. The pronouncer was Tom Welsh, DCPS director of research services.
Judges for the event were Tim Ballentine, DCPS executive director of instructional research and accountability; Tom Scott, DCPS supervisor of test development/MAP; Glenna Goings, Supervisor of Performance Analytics; and JoAnn Leskanic, principal of Assumption Catholic School.
