Duval County Public Schools receives millions to
implement Math & Science standards
Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) has been selected as one of five Florida school districts to receive part of a $21.9 million federal grant to implement the state’s new math and science standards.
The grant, which was offered through the U.S. Department of Education’s Mathematics and Science Partnership, was issued to The Partnership to Rejuvenate & Optimize Mathematics and Science Education (Florida PROMiSE).
"This grant will increase the number of Duval County students who choose science, technology, engineering and mathematics post secondary careers," said Duval County Chief Officer of Curriculum Services Kathryn LeRoy. "Our teachers will now have the necessary tools to provide students the best possible education in these areas."
Florida PROMiSE will help increase student achievement in mathematics and science, and will allow the district to increase their collaborations with Miami and Hillsborough’s math/science leadership teams to share best practices for improved classroom instruction.
The grant will be funded over a three-year period with $5.9 million the first year, and $8 million expected to be awarded in both the second and third years.
During the first year, DCPS will receive more than $100,000, which will help fund five new positions over the next two years. These positions will provide high-quality professional development and support to teachers as they implement the new math and science standards for Duval County.
Based on leading national and international mathematics and science standards, the revised standards incorporate the latest knowledge, concepts, and techniques that form the educational foundation for students to compete in the global economy of the future.
