Duval County Teacher receives National StarTalk Grant

JACKSONVILLE - The National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages has selected Mei Lian Lu as one of 12 recipients nationally to receive a grant to attend the StarTalk Institute for Chinese K-12 teachers.

At the 10-day summer institute, teachers will explore key concepts and principles related to mentoring, leadership and change. They will collaboratively develop standards-based, thematically focused, and culturally rich Chinese teaching materials and explore the use of emerging classroom technologies and social technologies such as blogs, podcasts, digital storytelling, and wikis to disseminate materials and expand their mentoring and leadership to the profession at the district and state levels.

Mei Lian Lu started teaching with Duval County Public Schools last year, and currently teaches Chinese at Mandarin High School. Chinese is the newest language available for students to choose as an elective at various schools throughout the district.

“It is an honor for one of our teachers to receive funding to the StarTalk Institute,” said Chief of Academic Services, Amy Lingren. “Ms. Lu will come back to our school district equipped to develop, refine and synthesize her professional knowledge, skills and expertise by collaborating to design technology-infused, classroom teaching materials that reflect the best thinking of the profession.”

The StarTalk Institute takes place at Iowa State University from Saturday, June 20 to Monday, June 30.
