Duval County Public Schools Elementary Students Participate in Districtwide Math Competition

JACKSONVILLE – More than 150 elementary school students competed last night in the 2008 Duval County Sunshine Math Competition, held at Wolfson High School.

The Sunshine Math Competition, which was started by the Florida Department of Education, is a voluntary mathematics competition that provides extra challenges to the district’s top achieving math students.

The top first- through fifth-grade students at each school were given the opportunity to participate in the competition based on their high performance on their school's Sunshine Math Program.

During the competition, students took a rigorous test, which was scored on site. Once all of the tests were scored, the following winners were announced:

First Grade
First Place - Finn Forrest, Atlantic Beach
Second Place - Meredith Abdelnour, Hendricks Avenue
Third Place - John Khouri, Greenfield
Fourth Place - Nelay Govan, Greenland Pines
Fifth Place - Kristina Liao, Twin Lakes Academy

Second Grade
First Place - Robby Mangum, Ft. Caroline
Second Place - Christine Driscoll, San Jose
Third Place - Whitney Lewis, San Mateo
Fourth Place - Christopher Vairogs, Chets Creek
Fifth Place - Shreya Ravi, Jacksonville Beach

Third Grade
First Place - Nicholas Tsoutsos, Ft. Caroline
Second Place - Victoria Ge, Twin Lakes Academy
Third Place (tie) - Amy Batten, Louis Sheffield & Thurman James Picarelli, Sabal Palm
Fourth Place - Cayla Coen, Kernan Trail
Fifth Place - Rafina Cebak, Atlantic Beach

Fourth Grade
First Place - Jared Jones, Sabal Palm
Second Place - Luke Pfeiffer, Seabreeze
Third Place - Jacob Skiles, Hendricks Avenue
Fourth Place - Juliette Deaton, Brookview
Fifth Place - Toyaj Singh, Mandarin Oaks

Fifth Grade
First Place - Dipayan Banerjee, Mandarin Oaks
Second Place - Elyse Carley, Ft. Caroline
Third Place - Yvelis Rivera, Chimney Lakes
Fourth Place - Melisa Kalac, Greenland Pines
Fifth Place - Dalton Unsen, Louis Sheffield

Students in the first through fifth grades were given trophies for first, second and third place. Additionally, all students received a ribbon and a certificate signed by Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals.
